Krzysztof (Henryk Baranowski), a scientist and university lecturer, uses a computer to calculate the bearing strength of the ice sheet on the surface of a nearby lake—and the margin of error. His ten-year-old son Paweł (Wojciech Klata) wants to try out his new ice skates with a friend. Tragedy ensues when the ice cracks under their combined weight, and both boys drown.
